Wifi while Traveling (Sophos blocking captive portal)

When traveling, you may encounter "captive portals" to log on to wifi on planes or in airports and hotels, or while accessing other public wifi. Sophos Endpoint anti-virus software may block this process because it deems it unsafe. This typically happens on Mac OS.


Before traveling make sure that your operating system and Sophos are up to date. If you still encounter access problems, follow the steps below. If you don't see these options in Sophos please contact the ITS Helpdesk for more assistance. 


1. Click the Sophos shield icon in the menubar by the clock

2. Click Open Sophos Endpoint

3. Click About in the lower right corner

4. Click Run Diagnostic Tool

5. Click Captive Portal Mode on the left side

6. Click Enable at the top

7.  Try to connect to the desired Wifi network again.  You may have to toggle Wifi off and back on to find the network again.
